Scottsdale promotes sustainability through Earth Week and Water Awareness Month

Valley water partners have initiated a series of events throughout April to promote water conservation. The Water Awareness Month campaign aims to highlight the importance of conserving water in the Southwest. Key events include:

- April 5: A discussion on new approaches in hydrologic science from USGS's Arizona Water Science Center.

- April 6: A presentation on home technologies for water conservation by EPA WaterSense.

- April 13: A forecast of Colorado River streamflow by NOAA’s Colorado Basin River Forecast Center.

- April 19: A report on the history of the Salt River Project by SRP’s manager of Research Archives & Heritage.

- April 20: An interactive overview of water-related activities at Arizona's state parks.

Scottsdale Earth Week will run from April 22 (Earth Day) to April 29 (Arbor Day), featuring various activities such as volunteer road cleanups, tree giveaways, and a green expo breakfast with city officials. The week concludes with a tree planting ceremony marking Scottsdale’s 40th year as a Tree City USA.

Throughout National Library Week (April 3-9), residents are encouraged to participate in a bookmark design contest themed “Connect with Your Library!” Submissions can be made at any library branch or shared on social media using #ScottsdaleLibraryWeek2022.

The Civil War Roundtable will feature James Hessler discussing Major General Daniel Edgar Sickles' controversial role at Gettysburg. This event is scheduled for April 19 at Scottsdale Civic Center Library.

Additional ongoing events include Spring Training at Scottsdale Stadium, Arizona Bike Week, ArtWalk, and Old Town Scottsdale Farmers Market.

A Green Building webinar titled “Simple Solutions to Restore Our Earth” will take place on April 7. Dorie Morales from Green Living magazine will provide insights into sustainable living practices.

A shredding event for document disposal is set for April 9 in the Walmart parking lot on Northsight Blvd., costing $5 per box.

The All Things Senior Expo and Tradeshow will offer resources for the senior community on April 14 at Scottsdale Stadium.

For those needing assistance with digital library services, drop-in eMedia classes are available throughout the month at various library locations.

In other news, Veterans AZ Season 2 Episode 1 highlights contributions to Arizona's veterans’ legacy by Nikki Stratton and Army veteran Cole Hickman. Additionally, efforts by Republic Services volunteers have enhanced Rotary Park with new trees and gardens. Information about traffic restrictions around Scottsdale and COVID-19 statistics in Maricopa County is also available.
