Brian Fernandez's journey from the United States Air Force to owning a coffee business began with a memorable cup of coffee in Kenya. During his 23 years in active duty and reserves, he developed an interest in the coffee community, trying different coffees wherever he traveled.

After retiring from the Air Force, Fernandez served as a Phoenix Police officer for 20 years before pursuing his dream of starting a business. He initially planned to establish a wholesale coffee operation, learning to roast coffee and trademarking a name.

The brand Yellow Spruce Roasters reflects his connections to Arizona and Colorado. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his plans, prompting him to open a coffee shop instead. In September 2020, Yellow Spruce Roasters opened in Old Town Scottsdale despite pandemic-related challenges.

Fernandez has since expanded his operations. In October 2023, he launched Yellow Spruce Wine Bar next to the original coffee shop, offering wine, specialty drinks, local beer, and small bites. Recently, he opened another coffee shop at Scottsdale’s Civic Center Library.

His wife, also a veteran and former police officer, joined him in this venture post-retirement. Fernandez's passion for coffee and community is evident in his business endeavors. He enjoys being part of significant moments in people's lives through his establishments.

Fernandez hopes that one day someone will have a life-changing experience with Yellow Spruce coffee as he once did.
