Residents and visitors of Old Town Scottsdale will observe a tribute to veterans and military service members along Drinkwater Boulevard. The initiative, known as the Scottsdale Salutes program, is now in its third year. It was launched by the Veterans Advisory Commission to raise awareness and appreciation for veterans within the community.

The city has strong ties with military personnel. Among those honored on the banners is Winfield Scott, a Captain in the United States Army who was wounded during the Civil War. Scott, who founded Scottsdale, is featured alongside other veterans and service members connected to the community.

The banners are displayed from Osborn Road to Scottsdale Road between November 1st and November 15th.

This year's honorees include individuals from various branches of the military, each having contributed significantly during their service periods. Jim Bruner served as a Judge Advocate General officer in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1966 before becoming an influential figure in Scottsdale's civic life. James Byrd served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of his tenure with the United States Marine Corps from 2007 to 2011.

Stephen Casares' service spanned from 2009 until this year with roles including Military Intelligence Officer and instructor at West Point after combat deployments. Brian Cederlind served as a navigator during the Vietnam War with the United States Air Force from 1969-1975.

These individuals are just a few among many whose contributions are celebrated through this program, showcasing their dedication both during and after their military careers.

The Scottsdale Salutes initiative continues to honor these individuals while reinforcing Scottsdale’s historical connections with those who have worn uniforms in service of their country.
