Community Juneteenth celebration returns; city warns against scam calls

Scottsdale's Community Juneteenth Celebration, presented by Mayo Clinic, is set to return this Saturday. The event, hosted by the city and Scottsdale Arts, will feature a variety of cultural activities at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and Scottsdale Civic Center from 2-7 p.m. Admission and parking are free.

Juneteenth marks the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas and is considered the oldest African American holiday. It has been celebrated annually across various parts of the United States since 1866.

In observance of Juneteenth as a city holiday, most Scottsdale city offices will be closed on Monday, June 19. Trash and recycling services will continue as usual.

The Scottsdale City Court and Police Department have issued warnings about scam calls impersonating Valley law enforcement agencies. "Most law enforcement agencies will never call to request money," they stated. If you receive such a call, it is advised to hang up and report it to the police non-emergency number at 480-312-5000.

Drowning remains a leading cause of death among children aged 1-4 in Arizona. Safety measures include taking CPR classes regularly, supervising children near water, ensuring no one swims alone, installing pool barriers, and keeping a phone nearby for emergencies.

The official monsoon season begins Thursday through September 30. Residents are encouraged to prepare emergency plans under the "Ready, Set, Go" guidelines provided by Scottsdale Fire.

Several public meetings are scheduled this week including sessions with the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee on June 12 and City Council on June 13.

June Days celebration continues in Old Town with daily events such as wine tastings and art exhibits. Upcoming highlights include "Scottsdale Stories and Sweets" on June 20 and "Donuts for Dads" on June 16.

Scottsdale Water has opened its rebate program early due to high demand. The program offers financial incentives for water conservation efforts including grass removal rebates for residential properties up to $5,000.

Civic Center Library’s Kids Café provides free lunches for those up to age 18 from noon-1 p.m., Monday-Friday.

The Arizona Department of Housing has awarded Scottsdale $940,000 from the Homeless Shelter and Services Fund aimed at providing temporary housing support services for homeless individuals and families.

A high ozone pollution advisory has been issued by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality for June 13-14. Residents are advised to take precautions during outdoor activities if they have respiratory sensitivities.

Construction continues at Scottsdale Civic Center following voter approval in a bond election with project completion events planned for fall.
