Scottsdale commemorates anti-discrimination ordinance anniversary amid Earth Week events

Scottsdale marks the one-year anniversary of its anti-discrimination ordinance, which was adopted unanimously by the City Council on April 20, 2021. The ordinance is part of the city's effort to prevent discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability within city limits. It covers areas such as housing sales and rentals, public-serving businesses, and employment.

In other news, Scottsdale will participate in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's 17th Annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back on Saturday. Residents can dispose of pills at two locations: Granite Reef Senior Center and Foothills District Police Station. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but liquids are not accepted.

Earth Week activities continue in Scottsdale with events scheduled through Friday. On Wednesday, residents can join a hike with natural resources coordinators at Brown's Ranch Trailhead. Thursday offers a virtual "Water Wise" session focusing on water conservation due to the Colorado River shortage. A webinar titled "Solar 101" will also be held that day for those interested in solar energy.

Friday's Arbor Day celebration takes place at Bell Road Sports Complex where Mayor Ortega will read a proclamation and oversee a tree planting ceremony.

Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West introduces a new exhibit titled “The Railroad Opening Up the West,” showcasing period train sets designed by local train clubs.

The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts presents "Balloonacy," a comedy show suitable for families with performances from April 29 to May 1.

Additionally, the Scottsdale Jazz Festival occurs on April 30 at Old Town Scottsdale’s Civic Center lawn featuring various artists including Richard Elliot and Rick Braun & Nayo Jones.

Looking ahead to May 7, Derrick Suwaima Davis debuts his theatrical work “DANCING WITH THE UNIVERSE | Native Style” at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. This production combines music and dance elements from Southwest tribes and Great Plains cultures.

Residents are encouraged to contribute to Scottsdale’s citizen tree inventory project led by the Environmental Advisory Commission by collecting data via an online portal and app.
