Man Arrested After Son Found Dead

Jail

City of Buckeye issued the following annoucement on Aug. 23.

A man faces murder charges after a shooting at a local hotel. The victim was shot several times and pronounced deceased after being transported to a local hospital. Buckeye police arrested the suspect, 44-year-old Wayland Deron McAfee.

On Aug. 19 at approximately 7 p.m., officers responded to a 911 hang up. As officers arrived on scene, additional information was received regarding a subject that was reported to have been shot and unresponsive inside one of the rooms. A responding officer immediately located McAfee leaving the hotel room and attempted to detain him.

McAfee was not compliant with commands and tried to leave the scene. A brief struggle ensued, during which McAfee was found to be armed with a handgun. The responding officer disarmed an uncooperative McAfee who then attempted to grab the officer’s duty handgun while being handcuffed. The officer deployed his taser in an attempt to subdue McAfee, which was not successful. With the assistance of additional responding officers, McAfee was taken into custody.

Officers then entered the hotel room and discovered a 20-year-old male, later identified as Tamar D. McAfee, on the floor with gunshot wounds. Buckeye Fire Department and Buckeye Valley Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and transported Tamar to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

McAfee was booked into the Maricopa County Intake and Release facility on the listed charges:

  • 1 Count of 13-1104A Murder in the Second Degree C1F
  • 1 Count of 13-1204A8A Aggravated Assault on an Officer C5F
