Retired Presiding City Judge Joseph Olcavage, affectionately known as Judge O., has passed away. Known for his attentive gaze and intellect, Judge Olcavage served the Scottsdale City Court with distinction. Over a career spanning more than 40 years, he held various positions including Assistant City Prosecutor, City Prosecutor, Assistant City Attorney in the Civil Division, Associate Judge, and from 2012 to 2022, Presiding Judge of Scottsdale.
The city of Scottsdale is undertaking a turf conversion project at Horizon Park to support water conservation efforts. The Parks and Recreation Department is replacing 27,000 square feet of sod with xeriscape, including granite and drought-tolerant plants and trees. This initiative is expected to save 695,000 gallons of water annually. The department aims to reduce water usage by 25% below Arizona Department of Water Resources guidelines through this project and other measures.
Jet Aviation is expanding its presence at Scottsdale Airport with two new projects. The company, which opened a fixed-base operator facility at the airport in January 2021, is now working on developments that will enhance its services.
The Annual Sky Kids Event made its return to Scottsdale Airport, offering nearly 100 young individuals with special needs, disabilities, or life-threatening medical conditions the opportunity to experience flight. The event is organized by Sky Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to boosting confidence and self-esteem in youth through flights in private airplanes or helicopters. Participants were given the unique chance to take control of the aircraft during their flights.
