Scottsdale Fire Department recently held its annual ceremony at the Fieldhouse at Scottsdale Stadium to honor employees and volunteers for their exceptional contributions in 2022.
"Our motto is 'We Care for You.' That is our baseline," stated Fire Chief Tom Shannon. "These individuals go above and beyond to exceed this expectation to meet the needs of our community."
The Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Kathy Chicaferro for her extensive work in researching and organizing cards representing those who fell during the 9/11 attacks. She also plays a key role in the car seat inspection program, serving as an administrator, scribe, and certified technician.
Carla Scully received the Civilian Employee of the Year award for her role as prevention administrative assistant, where she managed customer phone calls and improved departmental efficiency, including enhancements to the Records Management System.
Firefighter Brandon Crowther was named Firefighter of the Year due to his dedication to EMS and medic precepting programs. He actively participates in Training and Wellness teams, assisting new recruits.
Captain Brian Dutcher earned Officer of the Year recognition for his commitment to both physical and mental wellness within the department.
Victor Ledo received the Chief’s Award for Outstanding Service as Facilities Management Coordinator. His efforts ensure that SFD facilities are well-maintained, including overseeing new fire stations' construction and a training facility.
Meritorious Service awards were given to Engineer Joseph Jesatko for rescuing a woman from a housefire while off-duty; Captain Kelly Cavner for assessing high-risk facilities with crews; and Doug Wilson, Senior Plan Reviewer, for updating fire codes through extensive research and collaboration with other city departments.
The Eddie Loggins Career Achievement Award honored Captain Jeff Abts as he concludes his 44-year career. Abts has served in various roles such as Dispatcher, Communication Center Manager, Firefighter, Engineer, and Captain. His most significant impact has been coaching and mentoring others.
Engineer Chris Ouzounis was also recognized for his contributions as part of the Training and Development Team. His involvement with the Apparatus Team ensures operational readiness when responding to calls.
"Our award winners are an example of the dedication all of our staff have to residents and visitors of Scottsdale," said Shannon. "We are pleased to highlight great work and honor the best of the best."
