Retired Presiding City Judge Joseph Olcavage, affectionately known as Judge O., has passed away. Known for his attentive gaze and intellect, Judge Olcavage served the Scottsdale City Court with distinction. Over a career spanning more than 40 years, he held various positions including Assistant City Prosecutor, City Prosecutor, Assistant City Attorney in the Civil Division, Associate Judge, and from 2012 to 2022, Presiding Judge of Scottsdale.
Judge Olcavage was recognized for his strategic thinking and innovative contributions to the municipal system. He mentored new judges and developed an in-house data system to improve court operations. His commitment to equal justice was evident throughout his career.
"In recognizing the humanity of our fellow human beings— we pay ourselves the highest tribute," said Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, a sentiment that reflected Judge Olcavage's belief in justice and restoration.
Mayor David D. Ortega shared personal memories of Judge Olcavage's wisdom and leadership during their interactions over the years. "He inspired his staff and everyone he encountered by his authentic leadership," Ortega noted.
A Funeral Mass will be held on December 15th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Community in Scottsdale followed by a graveside service at Paradise Memorial Gardens.
"Our hearts and prayers are with Donna and the Olcavage family at this most difficult time," expressed Mayor Ortega.
