The Maricopa County Flood Control District has commenced construction on the Rawhide Wash Flood Hazard Mitigation Project in Scottsdale. The project aims to construct a levee system designed to contain a 100-year flood along Rawhide Wash, stretching from Pinnacle Peak Road to half a mile north of Happy Valley Road. This initiative is expected to mitigate flood risks and potential damages while removing over 850 homes and buildings from the floodplain. The first phase will extend from Pinnacle Peak Road to the Miller Road alignment and will feature new flood walls, improvements to existing walls, and landscaping.

In other community news, the Scottsdale Police Department's crisis response canines, Chase and Rocket, are hosting a toy and supply drive for their birthdays in December. Donations such as soft dog and cat treats, small fleece blankets, hard dog toys, cat toys, dog beds, chicken broth, and peanut butter can be dropped off at any library or Horizon Park Community Center.

Public meetings scheduled for this week include sessions by various city councils and commissions. Notably canceled is the Board of Adjustment meeting. Interested individuals are encouraged to learn about city boards' responsibilities and how they might serve.

Scottsdale continues its month-long holiday celebration known as Scottsdazzle in Old Town Scottsdale with various events planned throughout December. Highlights this week include the Gold Palette ArtWalk on Thursday evening, Jingle Barre classes on Saturday morning, Dazzling Magic Shows over the weekend at Marshall Way Bridge, an annual Holiday Art Show at Via Linda Senior Center on Friday evening, and the Scottsdale Concert Band’s annual Holiday Pops program on December 16th.

Additional programs include Parents Night Out hosted by Horizon Community Center for children in grades one through five on Friday evening. A document shredding event will take place on Saturday morning at Walmart parking lot on N. Northsight Blvd., offering services at $5 per box.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is organizing town halls for veterans during “PACT Act Week of Action.” These sessions aim to inform veterans potentially eligible for VA benefits under the PACT Act about available resources.

Finally, Scottsdale Community College's student newspaper collection from 1970-2012 is now accessible digitally via Scottsdale Heritage Connection at Scottsdale Public Library.
