Scottsdale is advancing its sustainability efforts by developing a Community Sustainability Plan, as outlined in the city's Organization Strategic Plans for 2021 and 2022. This plan is also an essential part of Scottsdale’s 2035 General Plan.

On November 13, the City Council held a work study session to discuss draft elements of the plan. These included sections on air quality and water. Further discussions on energy, waste, and heat are scheduled for March 2024.

Feedback from previous sessions has been crucial in shaping the plan's five key areas: energy, water, waste, air quality, and heat. The council emphasized establishing baseline metrics, setting numeric targets, and evaluating the costs and benefits of actions.

The Scottsdale Environmental Advisory Commission (SEAC), which consists of seven residents with sustainability expertise, contributed to forming the plan's framework. They ensured it aligns with Scottsdale's character.

The city acknowledges the importance of expanding sustainability efforts to tackle issues like drought, extreme heat, air pollution, and energy use. The Community Sustainability Plan aims to be a roadmap with specific action steps for long-term goals. It stresses cohesive implementation by both the city and community members.

"Every household, business boardroom, church and school values responsible, reliable city services,” said Scottsdale Mayor David D. Ortega. “Working together we can set goals, and measure results to sustain a healthy, thriving community into the future."

Scottsdale has been committed to sustainability for decades. The recent City Council session marks another step forward in this ongoing effort.
