Short-term rental property owners in Scottsdale are required to obtain a city license by January 8, 2023. This requirement is part of a city ordinance that mandates compliance with safety, health, and neighbor notification standards. The licensing portal opened on November 28, 2022.

The city has informed all known short-term rental properties about this requirement through direct mail. However, as of December 14, only 530 out of an estimated 5,000 properties have applied for or received their licenses.

“I’m concerned that only a small percentage of all properties currently advertising in Scottsdale have applied for the license we require," stated Scottsdale Mayor David D. Ortega. "I urge all owners to act now and obtain the license - doing so is simple, and it's the law in Scottsdale."

Owners who did not receive the city's letter are still responsible for obtaining a license and complying with other legal requirements. Starting January 9, operating without a license will be illegal, and violators will face enforcement actions including fines starting at $1,000 per violation.

A short-term rental is defined as any rental lasting less than 30 days. Rentals of 30 days or more do not require this specific licensing process.

For more information on licensing requirements and to apply for a license, visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov and search “short-term rental.”
