The City Auditor's Office engaged Berry Dunn McNeil & Parker, LLC (BerryDunn) to conduct a wireless network security audit. The aim was to assess the design, implementation, and effectiveness of wireless network controls. This audit included a governance review of policies and procedures as well as a technical review of related security controls.

The governance review suggested formalizing hardening standards for wireless network components, defining log retention periods, and updating technology policies and procedures annually.

The vulnerability assessment did not reveal significant issues. The security, encryption, and authentication protocols in place were deemed acceptable for enterprise-class wireless networks. Recommendations were made to enhance configurations by avoiding passphrase reuse and reducing the number of wireless IDs used.

The department concurred with these recommendations and intends to implement them by the end of 2023.
