Scottsdale is set to celebrate Earth Week with a series of events aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices. The festivities begin on Earth Day, April 22, and conclude on Arbor Day, April 28, marking Scottsdale’s 41st year as a Tree City USA community.
The week-long event will feature various activities including the Scottsdale Green Expo, which will honor "Son of Godzilla," an invention pivotal in advancing modern trash and recycling collection. Attendees can engage with educational booths focused on sustainability and participate in art workshops utilizing reclaimed materials.
On Saturday, residents can join the citywide Adopt-a-Road cleanup organized in partnership with Keep Scottsdale Beautiful. Participants are provided safety vests and litter bags for this initiative. Additionally, there will be guided walks such as the Lifecycle of the Saguaro Walk at Brown’s Ranch Trailhead.
Sunday's schedule includes a Nature as Therapy Guided Walk where participants can learn about nature's impact on well-being. Monday through Wednesday offers hikes led by natural resources coordinators at different trailheads within McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
Tuesday features a Xeriscape Garden Tour offering insights into desert-friendly gardening practices. On Thursday, Scottsdale encourages biking to work or other destinations with incentives like free t-shirts and snacks available at designated locations.
Joan Baron will lead an interactive session on sustainable gardening practices while the Earth and Arbor Day ArtWalk invites attendees to explore galleries showcasing sustainable art along Main Street in Scottsdale Arts District.
The week culminates with an Arbor Day celebration at Chaparral Park where Mayor Ortega will read the Arbor Day proclamation followed by a tree-planting ceremony supported by local organizations like the Scottsdale Garden Club.
Throughout Earth Week, residents are encouraged to adopt eco-friendly habits such as conserving water through xeriscaping or smart irrigation systems, responsibly recycling electronics, using recycling tools like Recycle Right Wizard, and supporting pollinators essential to ecosystems.
