U.S. Representative David Schweikert's bipartisan legislation, aimed at expanding pumped storage hydropower in Arizona, has successfully passed the Senate and is now awaiting the President's signature. The bill proposes the exploration of new pumped storage facilities within the Salt River reservoir system, aiming to reduce energy costs for Arizonans, stabilize the electric grid during peak demand periods, and enhance the availability of affordable energy.

Representative Greg Stanton co-sponsored this legislation, playing a significant role in advancing innovative development for Arizona's resources. Senators Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema introduced companion legislation in the Senate earlier this year.

Pumped storage hydroelectricity involves moving water from a lower to an upper reservoir when energy demand is low. When demand peaks, water flows back down through turbines to generate electricity for up to 10-12 hours.

"Once again, Arizona has proven to lead the charge to deliver innovation," said Rep. Schweikert. He expressed gratitude towards Rep. Stanton and looked forward to seeing benefits for Arizona.

Rep. Stanton commented on the bill's passage: "Not only do pumped storage projects provide greater flexibility and improve reliability in our energy grid, but they also cut utility costs." He appreciated the collaboration with Congressman Schweikert and Senators Kelly and Sinema.

Senator Kelly emphasized that expanding hydropower would strengthen Arizona's energy grid: "This is about using technology to make our energy more reliable and affordable."

The House Natural Resources Committee had previously passed this legislation by unanimous consent in July. It was supported by Jim Pratt of Salt River Project GM & CEO.

Congressman Schweikert serves on several committees including House Ways and Means Committee and Joint Economic Committee.
