The McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park in Scottsdale has received a significant financial contribution from the Scottsdale Railroad & Mechanical Society. The $1 million donation, announced on June 22, will be used to construct a new indoor play facility as part of efforts to provide more year-round options for families visiting the park.
Bryan Bundy, community services business operations manager, expressed enthusiasm about the project. "We are excited to make the Railroad Park an even better place for kids and families year-round. Replacing the old and unused bunkhouse building with a beautiful new multiuse space will do just that," he said. The new facility will feature an indoor train-themed play structure, event spaces, and a shaded outdoor area.
Eric Damko, representing the Scottsdale Railroad & Mechanical Society, stated that "the project is a wise investment of community funding." He added that these improvements would enhance the long-term viability of both Scottsdale and the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park as a premier destination for families and visitors.
In addition to this donation, Scottsdale has allocated $7.5 million towards the renovation through its Capital Improvement Program. The project is scheduled for completion in 2024.
The McCormick Family initially donated 100 acres of land in 1967 with the condition that it be used to create a public park. Guy Stillman chartered the Scottsdale Railroad & Mechanical Society in 1971 as part of this agreement. The society provides technical expertise and raises funds through private donations and carousel ticket sales to support projects at the park.
McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park opened in October 1975 and remains an integral part of Scottsdale's parks system. While entrance to the park is free, tickets are required for rides on its train and carousel, which see over half a million riders annually.
