Scottsdale celebrates Arbor Day; City Council approves new transportation plan

The city of Scottsdale is set to host its Arbor Day Celebration, marking the conclusion of Earth Week events. The event will take place at 8 a.m. on April 29 at the Bell Road Sports Complex. Mayor Ortega will read the Arbor Day proclamation and participate in a tree planting ceremony. Guest speakers from the Scottsdale Garden Club and Scottsdale Environmental Advisory Commission are expected to attend. Notably, Scottsdale has been recognized as a Tree City USA community for 40 years, more than any other Arizona community.

In other news, the Scottsdale City Council has approved the 2022 Transportation Plan during their meeting on April 26. The plan emphasizes flexible transportation planning and investments in infrastructure. TAP 2022 includes five elements: Streets, Transit, Bikeways, Pedestrian Use, and Trails. It was developed alongside the city's 2035 General Plan and replaces the previous plan from 2016.

Scottsdale Water Administrator Kevin Rose has been named Arizona’s “Operation Leader of the Year.” Rose joined the city in 2017 and manages over 180 employees across various utility departments including water and wastewater services.

Free concerts are scheduled at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park every Sunday from May 1-29, featuring local bands from 7:30-9 p.m. Attendees can bring blankets or chairs to enjoy music along with food available from Hartley’s General Store or onsite food trucks.

A new theatrical work titled “DANCING WITH THE UNIVERSE | Native Style” will debut on May 7 at the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts. Created by Derrick Suwaima Davis, this production combines music and dance to explore themes related to nature's cycles.

On Saturday, April 30th, residents can participate in Prescription Drug Take Back events at two locations as part of an initiative led by U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration aimed at safe disposal of medications.

Additionally, Scottsdale Senior Services has introduced a new food program called “Commodity Supplemental Food Program” targeting adults aged 60 or older through partnerships with St Mary’s Food Bank and USDA.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality issued a high ozone pollution advisory for April 29-May 2 urging those with respiratory sensitivities to take precautions outdoors while also suggesting ways to reduce ozone emissions such as using gas instead of burning wood or opting for public transit.

Scottsdale’s Adopt-a-Road program recently saw record-breaking participation during its citywide cleanup event held on April 23 with over two tons of trash collected by volunteers who covered approximately 142 miles worth of roadways cleaned up across various areas within town limits
