City offices close for Juneteenth while police mourn fallen detective

Most city offices and facilities will be closed Wednesday, June 19, for Juneteenth. Trash and recycling collection is not affected. Residents are advised to place their containers in the usual spot by 5 a.m. on the morning of collection or the night before.

Scottsdale mourns the passing of Police Detective Ryan So, who died on Thursday, June 13, after sustaining duty-related injuries. So served the city for nine years and was a Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife and three children. Memorial service details are pending.

The following organizations are accepting donations and supporting So’s family: Fraternal Order of Police, Police Officers of Scottsdale Association, 100 Club, and The Scottsdale Police Foundation.

Scottsdale Airport has earned a Federal Aviation Administration Western-Pacific Region Outstanding Airport Award. The award recognizes airports that excel in various aspects of airport management and development. Scottsdale was praised for its dedication to operational excellence, innovation, safety, and community engagement in completing substantial improvement and construction projects.

Approximately 171,675 take-offs and landings occurred at Scottsdale Airport in 2023, making it one of the busiest single-runway general aviation airports in the state.

The city encourages residents to learn about responsibilities of city Boards and Commissions and how they can serve.

The "June Days" celebration continues with daily activities such as wine tastings, art exhibits, crafting workshops, live performances and family-oriented outings. Highlights include:

- Scottsdale Stories & Sweets Part Two - Stories Rediscovered at Community Design Studio on Tuesday.

- barre3 Pop Up Fitness sessions at Marshall Gardens.

- A book discussion featuring authors Paul Doiron & Luanne Rice at The Poisoned Pen on Saturday.

Residents can also enjoy summer solstice celebrations at Solstice Park on Thursday.

Vista del Camino offers free Saturday Summer Camp through July for children aged six years or older. Registration is required.

The Children's Learning and Play Festival will take place from noon to four on Saturday at WestWorld with various educational activities for families with kids.

Ongoing events include McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park's Summer Concert Series finale on Sunday; weekly Scottsdale ArtWalks; Old Town Scottsdale's Farmers Market every Saturday morning; events at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts; McDowell Sonoran Conservancy activities; Western Spirit Museum events; and Sister Cities programs.

The city provides appliance collection services for residential customers monthly. Work continues on phase two of the Raintree Drive Extension project to improve traffic flow between Loop101 Pima Freeway and Scottsdale Road with final phase completion expected in2026.

Residents affected by last month’s closure of Fry’s grocery store can use Scottsdale transit services to access other grocery stores in southern Scottsdale via Trolley or Valley Metro systems.

A public meeting regarding federally funded community assistance programs will be held from6:30–8pmonWednesdayatCivicCenterLibrary.Residents unable to attend can provide feedback online.

ADOT advises drivers to plan for restrictions as part of Loop101 improvements:

-The northbound Shea Boulevard on-ramp is now open.

-The southbound Pima Road/eastbound Princess Drive on-ramp will be closed starting Tuesday.

-Southbound Pima Road left-turn lanes restricted through July3.

-East-and westbound Loop101 closed overnight from Monday through Wednesday next week.

-Northbound Loop101 off ramps at Cactus Road remain closed until late-June,and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard until end-of-July as partof ADOT's two-year project to add lanesand improve interchanges between Shea Boulevardand Princess Drive/Pima Road.
