Nikki Stratton, whose grandfather survived the attack on Pearl Harbor as a crewmember aboard the USS Arizona (BB-39), was the keynote speaker at this year’s Veterans Day Commemoration. Stratton is serving as the sponsor of the next USS Arizona (SSN-803), a Virginia-class, fast-attack submarine that will join the U.S. fleet upon completion. Watch online or at 4 and 9 a.m., and 1, 5, 8, and 11 p.m. Sundays; and at 3 and 8 a.m., and noon, 4, 7 and 10 p.m. Thursdays on Cox channels 11 and 1011(HD) and Century Link channel 8001.
Deputy fire chief says farewell after 47 years. Jim Ford has had a lot of successes in Scottsdale, but one stands out. He is the steward of the landmark home sprinkler ordinance Scottsdale adopted more than 35 years ago. In 1985, the city passed an ordinance requiring every commercial and multi-family building to be outfitted with fire sprinklers. The ordinance also requires that single-family homes built after Jan. 1, 1986, be fully outfitted with approved fire sprinklers. The ordinance became a model of fire safety for communities nationwide. “Jim Ford has been an incredible asset and advocate for fire prevention all over the world,” said Scottsdale Fire Chief Tom Shannon. “There is no question his dedication to Scottsdale and saving lives is above and beyond. He will truly be missed.”

Scottsdale residents can properly recycle electronics like computers, printers, phones, cameras, flat panel televisions/monitors and stereo equipment for free from 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at the city’s North Corporation Yard, 9191 N. The Green Building Program kicks off a new webinar series Dec. 9.
