Scottsdale's McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, celebrating its 50th anniversary, is set to introduce new attractions this summer in a bid to boost attendance during the hotter months.

In January, the park unveiled an updated outdoor playground. Now, a new indoor playground themed around trains and a splashpad play area are slated for a July opening. Approximately one million visitors contribute nearly $2.5 million in revenue annually to the park, with attendance peaking from October to April and dropping substantially in summer.

The forthcoming attractions include a 10,000-square-foot indoor play area inside "The Roundhouse," featuring a locomotive-themed play structure and a multipurpose room. Additionally, a 5,000-square-foot splashpad, a much-requested feature identified during the master planning process, will provide recreation opportunities and is expected to increase summer use. A new entry plaza near Stillman Station will offer seating, public art, improved pathways, lighting, and additional restrooms.

The projects, totaling $13.1 million, are funded by bond financing approved by Scottsdale voters in 2019.

The park opened on October 4, 1975, on land donated by Fowler and Anne McCormick. Originally, the park was to be 50 acres but now encompasses 30 acres within Scottsdale city limits. Guy Stillman, Anne’s son, played a key role in developing the park and founded the Scottsdale Railroad and Mechanical Society, contributing significantly to its features.

In 1996, the park was renamed McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park to honor Stillman's contributions. Railfair 2025, a planned event celebrating the park’s 50 years, will take place on October 4-5, featuring music, activities, and a commemorative ceremony.

The park remains home to attractions like the Paradise & Pacific Railroad ride, a carousel, model trail exhibit, general store, snack shop, and the railroad museum. The recently updated playground includes swings, slides, and a mini stationary train. Events such as the Tracks N Tunes concert series continue to entertain visitors.
