Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Health Choice has provided $117,000 to Phoenix Starfish Place to support survivors of sex trafficking in Arizona. This contribution aims to assist women and their children as they work to rebuild their lives after escaping difficult situations.

Rebecca, a former resident of Phoenix Starfish Place, shared her experience: “At Phoenix Starfish Place, they love you until you can love yourself and support you on anything you could possibly think of.” Rebecca stayed at the facility while attending school and is now pursuing a career as a dog groomer.

Dr. Heather Carter, Medicaid Segment General Manager and CEO of Health Choice of Arizona, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “These survivors deserve a fresh start. We want to give back to these women and their families, break the cycle of exploitation, and inspire hope and health.”

Phoenix Starfish Place provides 15 safe apartments for survivors along with health and recovery services. This assistance helps individuals transition from shelters or temporary housing into stable environments where they can heal and rebuild their lives.

AZ Blue's partnership with Phoenix Starfish Place also includes efforts to improve access to health care options for residents. In January, discussions were held about health management topics such as diabetes and behavioral health.

In Maricopa County alone, approximately 3,000 women are trafficked annually. Initiatives like those supported by AZ Blue are crucial in offering these individuals opportunities for new beginnings.
