Scottsdale has taken a significant step in green building initiatives by adopting the 2021 edition of the International Energy Conservation Code and the International Green Construction Code as mandatory codes. This makes Scottsdale the first city in Arizona, and among only a few nationwide, to implement such comprehensive guidelines.
The adoption of these codes is aimed at clarifying code provisions, conserving natural resources, and integrating new technologies. It is projected that this change will reduce each new building's water use by 20% and decrease greenhouse gas emissions by at least 10%.
"This aligns with Scottsdale’s General Plan 2035 goal to reduce energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the heat island effect in our city," stated Senior Building Consultant Anthony Floyd.
New commercial developments in Scottsdale are now required to adhere to the city's green building code, ensuring that environmental practices are integrated into the construction industry.
The newly adopted International Energy Conservation Code applies to both residential and commercial buildings. Its benefits include enhanced ceiling insulation, efficient lighting systems, electrical vehicle charging infrastructure, and solar-ready rooftops. These improvements aim to lower energy usage, provide cost savings, enhance thermal comfort, and minimize environmental impacts. Nationally, it is estimated that these energy codes could result in $138 billion in energy cost savings and prevent 900 million metric tons of CO2 emissions from 2010 to 2040. This code will take effect on January 7, 2023.
Similarly, the new International Green Construction Code targets all new commercial and multifamily buildings. It offers environmental benefits like resource conservation and improved air quality; economic benefits including reduced operating costs; and social benefits such as equity in access to improved living conditions. This code is set to be enforced starting July 1, 2023.
