Senate Bill 1235 sponsored by Arizona State Senator Janae Shamp, was signed into law on April 1, 2024.
The bill will create the Arizona Child Safety Fatality and Near Fatality Review Team, who is responsible for reviewing “all possible factors surrounding a child's death and identify ways of reducing preventable fatalities.” They are a part of the Arizona Department of Child Safety.
The Review team will consist of multiple disciplinary experts, including "a licensed pediatrician who has professional experience relating to child abuse and neglect, a peace officer who has experience investigating child abuse and neglect fatalities and near fatalities," as well a social work, behavioral health practitioner, and an attorney with experience in child abuse cases.
Shamp represents Legislative District 29 in Arizona. She was elected to the state senate in 2023.
Shamp earned her Bachelor’s in Molecular Biosciences & Biotechnology from Arizona State University and her Bachelor’s in Nursing from Grand Canyon University. She is a Registered Nurse in the state of Arizona. She lives in Surprise, Arizona with her husband.
