General Dynamics secures Navy contract for new submarine asset prototype

General Dynamics Mission Systems has been awarded a $15.9 million contract by the U.S. Navy to design, test, and deliver the Mining Expendable Delivery Unmanned Submarine Asset (MEDUSA) system. This tactical mining system employs an expendable Unmanned Underwater Vehicle that can be launched from a submarine torpedo tube.

The development of MEDUSA aims to fulfill the U.S. Navy's requirement for a sophisticated maritime mining system with long-range offensive capabilities. The project involves designing, fabricating, and testing prototypes, along with risk reduction activities.

Options within the contract could increase its total value to $58.1 million if exercised. The design work will take place in multiple locations across Massachusetts, Virginia, Arizona, Rhode Island, and North Carolina, with completion expected by September 2026.

Dr. Laura Hooks, vice president and general manager of Maritime and Strategic Systems at General Dynamics Mission Systems, emphasized the growing need for advanced mine warfare assets like MEDUSA. "By leveraging our mature Bluefin Robotics unmanned underwater vehicle platforms... General Dynamics Mission Systems will provide exceptional capability," she stated.

The company leads a team including General Dynamics Electric Boat, General Dynamics Applied Physical Sciences, General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, EaglePicher, and MIKEL.

General Dynamics Mission Systems is part of General Dynamics and offers solutions to defense, intelligence, and cybersecurity sectors globally. It is headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia.
