The city of Scottsdale is urging residents to donate bottled water to support its hydration and cooling stations during the hot months. These stations are part of an effort to prevent heat-associated deaths, which increased by 25% in Maricopa County last year, reaching a total of 425. The city has established four hydration stations and four cooling stations across various locations, including senior centers and libraries.

Scottsdale is also collaborating with nonprofits to offer day relief centers that provide meals, showers, and additional services. These centers operate on Mondays at South Scottsdale Presbyterian Church and Fridays at Vista del Camino Community Center.

In other news, the Scottsdale Police Department is seeking public feedback as it undergoes reaccreditation. Since 1994, the department has been accredited by CALEA and must comply with 406 standards to maintain this status. Public input is encouraged regarding the department’s compliance with these standards.

The city invites residents to participate in upcoming public meetings covering topics like tourism development and environmental advisory. Additionally, historian Garry Adelman will present a lecture on battlefield preservation at the Civic Center Library as part of May's Civil War Roundtable.

Scottsdale is hosting several events this month, including Arizona Restaurant Week from May 19-28 and celebrations for the Indian Bend Wash project. Memorial Day will be observed with a ceremony at Scottsdale Memorial for the Fallen.

Ongoing activities include McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park’s Summer Concert Series, ArtWalks in Old Town Scottsdale, and a farmers market featuring local produce.

The "Beat the Heat" program seeks donations for care packages for seniors during summer. Contributions can be made at an event hosted by the police and fire departments on May 18.

Residents living in apartments or condos can recycle at designated drop-off locations throughout the city. Meanwhile, roadwork continues on McKellips Road between Loop 101 and Alma School Road as part of a two-phase project expected to finish in spring 2024.

Maricopa County requests input from residents about how Scottsdale contributes to community health. A survey is open until May 31 for those aged 12 and older to share their views anonymously.
