The City of Scottsdale conducted an audit to ensure compliance with Arizona state law, which mandates the use of the federal E-Verify system by service contractors and subcontractors. This system is used to verify employment eligibility for employees working on government contracts.

During the fiscal year 2021/22, auditors selected five city service contractors and two subcontractors for evaluation. From the records provided by these companies, auditors tested 37 employees hired after the implementation of the state requirement. The audit found that most city contractors and subcontractors were generally using the E-Verify program for their workers involved in city contracts. However, one contractor and one subcontractor failed to provide E-Verify documentation for two selected employees.

In response to these findings, the audit recommended that the Purchasing department continue reminding contractors about their obligation under the E-Verify requirement and inform them about potential selection for annual audits.

The Purchasing Director affirmed his commitment to "continue communicating the E-Verify requirements" and will "coordinate with the applicable contract administrators to fulfill the recommendation."
