Scottsdale issues summer watering guidance; celebrates Pride Month

Scottsdale Water has issued guidance for summer watering, emphasizing that most landscapes are overwatered. The recommendation is to water desert landscapes no more than twice a week and only between 7 p.m. and 10 a.m. This timing helps maximize plant care while minimizing evaporation.

Residents and businesses in Scottsdale have been asked to reduce water usage by at least 5%. To assist with this, Scottsdale Water offers services such as irrigation system checkups by certified city specialists. Residents can schedule these checkups by calling 480-312-5650.

In celebration of Pride Month, the rainbow flag will be displayed at Scottsdale City Hall. Mayor David D. Ortega has issued a proclamation recognizing June as Pride Month, which honors the 1969 Stonewall riots and promotes equal rights for LGBTQ+ individuals.

The city's free Community Juneteenth Celebration returns on June 17, presented by Mayo Clinic. The event includes culture, entertainment, music, wellness presentations, and career opportunities from 2-8 p.m. at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and Scottsdale Civic Center.

Public meetings scheduled include the Paths and Trails Subcommittee on June 6 at 8:30 a.m., Veterans Advisory Commission on June 7 at 5 p.m., and Board of Adjustment also on June 7 at 6 p.m.

June Days is underway in Old Town Scottsdale with activities such as wine tastings, art exhibits, crafting workshops, live performances, and family outings throughout the month.

Detour Company Theatre will present two shows from June 9-11 at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts: "Little Shop of Horrors" and "James and the Giant Peach." Admission is free but requires an RSVP.

Scottsdale Public Library supports cultural activities with various musical programs scheduled throughout June.

The Paiute Neighborhood Center will host a free Fresh Start for Women Workshop starting June 6. Applications are open until July 7 for Scottsdale’s Community Arts Grant Program aimed at nonprofit arts organizations serving the community.

Scottsdale Airport's recent projects highlight its commitment to environmental responsibility through energy savings and waste reduction efforts. Upcoming projects continue this focus on sustainability.

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve history has been added to the Scottsdale Heritage Connection at the public library with materials donated by Carla from McDowell Sonoran Land Trust/Conservancy now available for public access.
