The city of Scottsdale is marking the 33rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, a civil rights law signed by President George H. W. Bush on July 26, 1990. This act was designed to ensure equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities across all facets of American life.
Scottsdale has shown its commitment to not only meeting but exceeding the requirements set by this legislation. In March, the city unveiled an inclusive playground at Thompson Peak Park featuring new swings and interactive equipment. The park is one of two in Scottsdale that surpass basic federal guidelines for accessibility.
Residents can request disability-related accommodations for participation in various city activities. Available services include large print, audio, Braille publications, and interpreters for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Citizens are encouraged to report areas needing better access.
The Paiute Neighborhood Center will offer free vaccines in collaboration with the Maricopa County Health Department on Friday, July 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Vaccinations available include hepatitis A and B, Tdap, shingles, pneumococcal, and COVID-19. Children require parental consent to receive vaccinations.
Scottsdale's Back to School Program recently assisted over 900 students from more than 400 families through partnerships with HonorHealth and other local organizations. The initiative provided clothes, school supplies, wellness checks, dental screenings, and meals.
