Scottsdale invites veteran nominations for annual salute program

The city of Scottsdale is inviting nominations for its annual Scottsdale Salutes program, which honors local veterans and military service members. In November, light pole banners featuring these individuals will be displayed in Old Town for two weeks. Eligible nominees include veterans, active-duty service members, and members of the National Guard and reserves who live in Scottsdale or have significant ties to the community. Nominations are due by Friday, Sept. 27, with those selected being honored at a special reception.

The Scottsdale Veterans Advisory Commission initiated the recognition program to raise awareness of veterans' contributions within the community.

Mayor David D. Ortega is hosting a Constitution Day Contest to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1797. Participants can submit essays, artwork, original songs or acts, or podcasts by 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4. Prizes will be awarded across various categories and age groups.

Chaparral Road has reopened following work that began in May on a new pedestrian underpass along the Indian Bend multiuse path under Chaparral Road. Some lane closures remain as project completion is expected in early 2025.

Public meetings scheduled for the week of Sept. 9 include a City Council Special Meeting at 4 p.m., Tuesday; City Council Regular Meeting at 5 p.m., Tuesday; PSPRS Joint Fire and Police Local Board Meeting at 9 a.m., Thursday; Development Review Board at 1 p.m., Thursday; Human Services Advisory Commission at 5 p.m., Thursday; and Scottsdale Housing Agency Governing Board at 6 p.m., Thursday.

Upcoming events include the Arabian National Breeder finals from Sept. 11-14 at WestWorld and Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market from Sept. 13-15 also at WestWorld.

The September Civil War Roundtable features Robert D. Jenkins Sr.’s lecture on “The Cassville Affairs and the Failed Confederate Strategy in the Atlanta Campaign” on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Scottsdale Civic Center Library.

Arizona Restaurant Week runs from Sept. 20-29 showcasing local chefs with special menus across participating restaurants.

Rewind Night will celebrate the '70s from 6-9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, on Scottsdale Civic Center with various activities including live music and food trucks.

Ongoing events include weekly ArtWalks every Thursday evening and various activities hosted by Scottsdale’s Museum of the West among others.

Club SAR has extended its Saturday hours to operate from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., offering fitness classes and facilities for all levels of fitness enthusiasts.

The next “Shred It” event will take place from 7-10 a.m., Saturday, Sept.14 at Scottsdale Police Department District One location with services costing $5 per bag or box.
