The Phoenix City Council approved a "Temporary Outdoor Dining Program," as well as alcohol consumption areas that will further allow restaurants to implement social distancing for their customers.
The Planning and Development Department issued a statement saying that the Temporary Outdoor Dining Program will allow restaurants to "reduce their indoor capacity" to observe social distancing guidelines.
“Being responsive to businesses and their challenges during the pandemic have been a priority for the city and our staff," said Planning and Development Department Director Alan Stephenson in a press release. “For the restaurants who need to reduce their indoor capacity for safety, outside offers an option to maximize the customers they can serve without compromising that safety."
Normally, an outdoor dining permit can take anywhere from four to six weeks and requires a public hearing process. However, with the new Temporary Outdoor Dining Program, approval can come within a 15-day time frame.
