Phoenix will be getting a much-needed safety upgrade to its 35th Avenue corridor thanks to grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The city is set to receive about $17.5 million from the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program. The money will go toward improvements aimed at increasing safety, mobility and economic development on 35th Avenue between Interstate 10 and Camelback Road.
Mayor Kate Gallego said that stretch of road serves 250 small businesses and employs 8,000 people in multiple business sectors.
"This addition of the most modern infrastructure will spur the attraction and expansion of business in the area," Gallego said in a release posted on the city's website.
Some of these improvements include: Three new lighted pedestrian-activated signals, raised medians, LED street lights, milling and paving, adding fiber optic broadband cables and updating traffic signals. Another goal of the project is to optimize traffic signals, which could speed up travel times by an estimated 20%.
