City of Tempe issued the following announcement on May 29
The City of Tempe will reopen several park amenities on June 1, including dog parks, athletic fields, basketball courts and volleyball courts.
Mayor Mark Mitchell issued the emergency proclamation today, extending a proclamation from earlier this month that opened pickleball courts, tennis courts, disc golf and skate parks effective May 13. Reservations for athletic fields may not be immediately available for groups larger than 10.
Park amenities that remain closed beyond June 1 include playgrounds, city pools and splash play areas, exercise and fitness equipment at parks, and park ramadas and picnic areas.
“Tempe has taken a careful, thoughtful approach to reopening the city and will continue to put health and safety above all else as we make these decisions,” said Mitchell. “I know many residents are looking forward to using their city amenities once again and we are working to achieve a balance between reopening and ensuring the health of our employees and community.”
Park users must follow CDC guidance:
- Maintain 6 feet of physical distance from others.
- Do not gather in groups.
- Go home if you are sick.
- Cloth face coverings are strongly recommended whenever possible.
More city facilities scheduled to reopen June 15
Tempe is planning to reopen several city facilities on June 15, including the Tempe Public Library, pools, Tempe City Hall, Kiwanis Recreation Center, Tempe History Museum, community centers, the city compost yard, park ramadas, picnic areas, the Household Products Collection Center, Transit Store and other city buildings. Senior centers will reopen; however, programming for patrons 50+ will not resume at this time in compliance with CDC recommendations. In-person utility payments will also reopen. All facilities will have physical distancing and thorough sanitizing protocols in place. Hours, services and capacity may be limited throughout the summer.
The city is scheduled to begin offering arts and recreation classes later this month, with registration beginning June 5. An array of virtual and in-person classes will be available for a small fee. In-person offerings will have modified class sizes, physical distancing requirements and thorough sanitizing protocols in place. Temperature checks and face coverings may be required.
Some city facilities will reopen after June 15
Remaining closed until further notice are park playgrounds, splash play areas, Edna Vihel Arts Center, senior center programming, Tempe Center for the Arts and Tempe Diablo Stadium. Reopening plans for these facilities will be announced soon. These locations are reopening later because of difficulty in ensuring physical distancing or wearing face coverings, or because they serve vulnerable populations.
Decisions to reopen facilities and amenities are based on coronavirus data-tracking. Tempe follows these trends vigilantly and adheres to all CDC and state guidelines.
Public input opportunities
Residents and other patrons of city services and facilities will be asked in the coming days to provide their opinions about reopening plans and their comfort level with venturing out and participating in various activities. Opportunities to weigh in will be announced soon.
