Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve is preparing for a busy spring season by focusing on visitor safety. The city has organized two events to promote trail safety as the preserve welcomes hikers, bikers, and equestrian riders.
The first event, Trail Safety Day, is scheduled for Saturday, March 22, from 7 a.m. to noon at Brown’s Ranch Trailhead. In collaboration with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, the event aims to educate trail enthusiasts on etiquette, safety tips, and responsible use of the preserve. According to a statement, "Trail Safety Day is your go-to opportunity to connect with fellow outdoor lovers and learn how to navigate the trails with confidence." Local outdoor groups will participate, including the Desert Foothill Mountain Bike Association and the Arizona Trailblazers Hiking Club.
The second event, Canine Safety Day, will occur on Saturday, April 5, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at multiple trailheads, including Lost Dog, Gateway, Pima Dynamite, Brown’s Ranch, and Tom’s Thumb. This event is a partnership with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and the Scottsdale Fire Department, focusing on pet safety. Participants can learn how dogs react to desert temperatures, identify signs of heat exhaustion, and address heat-related emergencies. The event is geared towards making outings with pets both safe and enjoyable.
Both events are free and open to the public. For more details on Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve, visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov and search for "Preserve".
