The Scottsdale City Council has appointed Greg Caton as the interim city manager. Caton, who has been one of Scottsdale’s assistant city managers since May 2024, will take over following Bill Murphy's brief tenure in the role after Jim Thompson's departure in December. Murphy has since retired.
Caton is originally from Colorado and brings a wealth of experience in municipal government to his new position. Before joining Scottsdale, he served as the city manager in Grand Junction, Colorado, for eight years. His career also includes roles as town manager in Oro Valley, Arizona, and assistant city manager in Durango, Colorado.
Greg Caton holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Fort Lewis College in Durango and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Colorado at Denver. He is recognized as a credentialed city manager by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and actively participates in statewide multijurisdictional groups.
Caton officially began his duties as Scottsdale’s interim city manager on January 14.
