Scottsdale named finalist in Smart Cities Awards; honors Vietnam veterans

Scottsdale has been named a finalist for two technology innovation awards by the International Data Corporation Smart Cities Awards. The city developed and launched applications aimed at improving water conservation and expediting public safety response during large-scale events. Residents are encouraged to vote for these projects until 5 p.m. (ET) on March 31.

The awards acknowledge municipalities that utilize electronic methods to enhance residents' lives and attract visitors and businesses. These "Smart Cities" are recognized for their adoption of new technologies, with support from the IDC.

In other news, the Scottsdale City Council has approved modifications to a one-mile stretch of 68th Street between Indian School and Thomas roads. This project aims to narrow the road to match adjacent segments, improve traffic flow with modified medians, turn lanes, bike lanes, and pedestrian crossings.

Residents are cautioned about increased native wildlife activity in urban areas during spring. Coyotes, bobcats, javelinas, raccoons, and skunks have been reported in neighborhoods. The Arizona Game and Fish Department advises against leaving food out for wild animals.

A special event honoring Vietnam veterans will be held on National Vietnam Veterans Day at Scottsdale Civic Center's 360 Stage on March 29 at 5:30 p.m. The free event includes live music and an opportunity to meet veterans. RSVP is requested.

On March 30, Scottsdale will host an event honoring Cesar Chavez at the Civic Center Library Auditorium from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., featuring Bill Barquin discussing his dedication to the Latino community's well-being.

For April's Bike Month, Scottsdale will host several events including Cycle the Arts on April 16 and Bike to Work Day on April 27. Details can be found on Valley Metro's website.

Public meetings scheduled include a Library Board meeting on March 28 at 1 p.m., followed by a Protect and Preserve Scottsdale Task Force meeting on March 29 at 6 p.m.

Arizona Bike Week takes place from March 29-April 2 at WestWorld with various entertainment options for motorcycle enthusiasts and music fans.

The city offers ongoing activities such as Sun & Sounds through March 28, a spring training exhibit through April, weekly ArtWalks every Thursday evening, Old Town Farmers Market every Saturday morning through June, performances at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts throughout the year, and McDowell Sonoran Conservancy events.

Programs like hearing loss rehabilitation sessions starting April 3 at Granite Reef Senior Center require registration. The Beat the Heat program seeks donations for homebound seniors between April 3-May 26 at Via Linda Senior Center.

Mildred Heber received the Individual Spirit of Scottsdale Award for her volunteering efforts with Human Services while The Holland Center won the Organization Award for cultural programming contributions.

Birthday party reservations can now be made online for Eldorado and McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic Centers during summer months. Various recreation job positions are open as summer approaches in Scottsdale.
