The city of Scottsdale is mourning the loss of Fire Captain Kory Yule, who passed away on January 7 due to cancer. Yule, aged 42, served the Scottsdale community for over two decades. His illness, multiple myeloma, is linked to exposure to "forever chemicals," and his passing is considered a line-of-duty death. Arrangements for services are being made, and further details will be shared.

In other news, construction on Loop 101 by the Arizona Department of Transportation continues this weekend. The southbound section between Princess Drive/Pima Road and Shea Boulevard will close from Friday night until Monday morning. Detours will be in place during this phase of the two-year project aimed at adding lanes and improving interchanges.

Scottsdale will also host the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon on January 14, affecting street closures. Most city offices will be closed on January 15 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day; however, solid waste collection remains unchanged.

Additionally, short-term rental owners in Scottsdale must renew their annual licenses at a fee of $250 per property. Failure to renew by the expiration date will require a new application.

Several public meetings are scheduled for early January, including those for the Human Relations Commission and City Council sessions. Residents can participate or listen in on these discussions regarding city issues and projects.

Scottsdale's Signature Event Season kicks off soon with various activities such as Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction and Western Week events. Highlights include art walks and cultural festivals celebrating Scottsdale's heritage.

For residents looking to dispose of Christmas trees or documents securely, recycling options are available through January 15. Additionally, free tax preparation workshops and vaccination clinics are being offered this month.

Community programs have successfully supported families during the holidays through initiatives like Adopt-a-Family. Meanwhile, local volunteers have revitalized Agua Linda Park with new plantings funded by a Neighborhood Advisory Commission grant.

Scottsdale encourages individuals interested in becoming certified lifeguards to enroll in StarGuard training courses available now. The city's job openings include a Traffic Engineering Technician position focusing on traffic operations and planning.

For more information about city services or events, residents can contact the City Call Center or visit Scottsdale's website for updates.
