Scottsdale's 2023 Veterans Day Commemoration is set to take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 11, at the Memorial Lawn of Scottsdale Civic Center. The event is organized in collaboration with American Legion Post 44 and other veterans service organizations.

The keynote speaker for this year's commemoration is Michael McLaughlin, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy (retired). McLaughlin served in the U.S. Naval Submarine force for three decades and held positions such as commanding officer of USS LA JOLLA (SSN 701), Commodore of Submarine Squadron 11, and Chief of Staff of Naval Submarine Forces. He concluded his naval career as Commander of Submarine Group Two, overseeing 25 attack submarines on the East Coast. After retiring from the Navy, McLaughlin joined Arizona Public Service (APS) in 2011 and worked at Palo Verde Generating Station until his retirement in 2022 as Vice President of Site Services.

The event will be emceed by Mayor David D. Ortega and will include remarks from representatives of Scottsdale’s American Legion Post 44 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Chapter 3513.

Traditionally held at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park in the afternoon, this year’s commemoration has been moved to a morning slot at the Civic Center Memorial Lawn. This location features Scottsdale’s Memorial for the Fallen and the Chaplain sculpture, which honors veterans and military chaplains.

The program will begin with a half-hour performance by the Scottsdale Fire Department Pipe and Drums starting at 10:30 a.m., featuring patriotic music.

For further details about this event, visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov or contact the Office of Communication.

Additional local Veterans Day activities include "Scottsdale Salutes," where banners honoring local veterans will be displayed along Drinkwater Boulevard during early November. This initiative was launched last year by the Scottsdale Veterans Advisory Commission to honor community veterans.

Another event is a free performance by The Jazz Ambassadors of The United States Army Field Band on November 9 at Scottsdale Civic Center's East Bowl.

Throughout the year, Veterans AZ provides video programs and podcasts highlighting Arizona veterans and supporting organizations. More information can be found on ScottsdaleAZ.gov/veterans.
