The Scottsdale City Council has approved two projects aimed at enhancing the Paiute Neighborhood Center, with separate funding sources designated for each initiative. The council's decision focuses on upgrading aging facilities and addressing the demand for affordable housing in Scottsdale.
There was some concern among residents regarding the use of voter-approved bonds for an affordable housing project not included in the 2019 bond package. However, officials clarified that bonds will solely be used for their intended purpose: improving the Paiute Neighborhood Center.
The renovation of the Paiute Neighborhood Center is set to proceed with funds from a 2019 bond election, where voters approved Project 25: Replace Aging Buildings that Comprise Paiute Community Center. Initially estimated at $11.2 million, inflation has increased construction costs. On September 19, the City Council allocated an additional $5.3 million from the General Plan Initiatives designation in the General Fund Operating Fund to cover these expenses. The upgrade aims to modernize facilities while reducing annual operating and maintenance costs.
In a separate effort, up to 28 affordable housing units will be constructed at Paiute using federal housing money administered by Maricopa County and Scottsdale General Fund dollars. This project does not involve bond financing. The Residence at Paiute will offer studio and two-bedroom units primarily for seniors and persons with disabilities, along with temporary bridge housing for families working towards stable independent living.
The construction cost for this affordable housing project is estimated at $15.7 million, funded equally by federal money and General Plan Initiatives designation in the General Fund.
Scottsdale voters were not required to approve bond financing for this affordable housing initiative, ensuring no bond funds are used for The Residence at Paiute project.
