August marks Drowning Impact Awareness Month (DIAM) in Arizona, a significant initiative that began in August 2004 with the collaboration of Phoenix Children's Hospital. It has grown to become the largest water safety effort in the state. The months of June, July, and August are particularly concerning for child drownings in Arizona, with back-to-school activities adding to the risks during August.
In response, Scottsdale is reinforcing its commitment to drowning prevention through education and outreach. The city offers various programs, including swimming lessons for all ages and abilities. With support from a grant by USA Swimming, Scottsdale will provide free swimming lessons throughout August. These lessons cater to a wide range of participants, from infants aged six months to three years in the "sea babies" category to adults seeking swim and stroke refinement classes for those 18 years and older.
Registration opens on Tuesday, July 25 for Scottsdale residents, while non-residents can begin enrolling on Tuesday, August 1. Interested individuals can find class schedules and locations by visiting Recreation.ScottsdaleAZ.gov.
The city emphasizes that learning about water safety is crucial at any age and encourages everyone to take advantage of these free classes.
