Scottsdale is preparing for the summer season by offering increased pay and incentives to lifeguards. The city's pools, which open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, require 40 lifeguards to ensure full hours and services. These roles include teaching swim lessons and managing pool activities.
Kyu-Bin Hyun, Scottsdale Parks and Recreation Manager, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming season: “We always look forward to having our pools bustling with fun and activity in the summer. There’s something special watching families and swimmers come back to the pools year after year. We are excited to welcome new lifeguards to the City so they can be part of the experience. Being a lifeguard is rewarding and impactful – it’s more than a job. This summer we are offering lifeguards increased pay, a referral bonus and reimbursement for certification. Now is a great time to join Scottsdale Aquatics!”
The city has announced specific incentives for its Summer 2023 Lifeguard program:
- 'Special duty pay' during peak season (May 21 - Sept. 9) includes $16 per hour for Lifeguard/Instructor positions, $17.50 per hour for Head Lifeguards, and $19 per hour for Assistant Pool Managers.
- Full reimbursement of StarGuard certification class fees after 90 days of employment.
- A $125 referral bonus for each new lifeguard referred.
Scottsdale's pools are accessible via car, public transport, or bike lanes, offering flexible schedules that extend beyond summer with opportunities for advancement.
Prospective employees must first gain certification through StarGuard Elite and Starfish Aquatics Institute courses offered in March at McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic Center and Eldorado Aquatic Center.
