Paul Messinger named historian emeritus by Mayor Ortega

In a recent announcement, Mayor David D. Ortega honored Paul Messinger by naming him "Scottsdale's Historian Emeritus." This title is in recognition of Messinger's lifelong dedication to preserving the history of Scottsdale. Known for his storytelling abilities, Messinger has shared stories about the community through various mediums including newspaper columns, books, and lectures.

Messinger played a key role in founding the Scottsdale History Hall of Fame in 1994 and was inducted into it a year later. He contributes a memoir-style history column to The Arizona Republic, highlighting individuals who have shaped Scottsdale's identity. Additionally, he and his family were instrumental in establishing the Scottsdale Heritage Connection at Civic Center Library.

Mayor Ortega expressed gratitude for Messinger's efforts: “We thank Paul for his dedication and contribution to the preservation of our history and the culture of our city,” said Mayor David D. Ortega. “Scottsdale Historian Emeritus Paul Messinger ties our history with today, as we go forward into the future.”

Paul Messinger arrived in Scottsdale in 1942 and worked on his family's farm located at Miller and Indian School roads. In 1950, he married Cora, his high school sweetheart, with whom he raised two sons. He founded Messinger Mortuary on their farm property in 1959 and also operated Scottsdale’s first ambulance service.

Beyond his business endeavors, Messinger was actively involved in public service through various organizations such as the Scottsdale City Council, the Scottsdale Town Enrichment Program, Friends of the Scottsdale Public Library, among others.
