Scottsdale considers designating City Hall within historic property district

The city of Scottsdale is considering an amendment to its zoning map to designate the City Hall as part of a historic property district. Public meetings are scheduled for April 12 and April 13 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at One Civic Center. The Historic Preservation Commission has identified City Hall, built in 1968 by architect Bennie Gonzales in Pueblo Revival style, as having potential historic significance.

Mayor David D. Ortega declared April 16-22 as Volunteer Appreciation Week in Scottsdale, recognizing over 3,234 volunteers who contributed significant hours last fiscal year.

April is also Safe Digging Month in Scottsdale, emphasizing the importance of identifying utility lines before excavation to prevent service interruptions and safety hazards.

Scottsdale offers various public meetings this month, including sessions on city issues and activities. Notable events include the Entertainment Extravaganza featuring senior citizens performing at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts on April 13 and the Gold Palette ArtWalk hosted by the Scottsdale Gallery Association.

The Scottsdale Sister Cities Association will celebrate its 35th anniversary with Cairns, Australia, on April 15 at an exhibition showcasing watercolor scenes of both cities.

A Glow Up Family Dance Party is set for April 15 at Cactus Park. Additionally, Civil War Historian Lesley Gordon will speak at the Civil War Roundtable on April 18.

Scottsdale Earth Week begins on Earth Day with events promoting sustainability. The week concludes with a tree-planting ceremony on Arbor Day.

Ongoing activities include exhibitions like "The Rich Legacy of Scottsdale Spring Training" and regular events such as the Old Town Farmers Market and ArtWalks.

The Mayor’s Youth Council invites teens to a Youth Town Hall event titled “Unleashing Your Passion” on April 30. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program continues through April 13 for tax preparation help without appointments required.

Bianca Lochner was named among Government Technology's Top 25 Doers, Dreamers and Drivers for her contributions as Chief Information Officer of Scottsdale.
