The city of Scottsdale has been recognized as a finalist in two categories of the 2023 International Data Corporation Smart Cities Awards. The nominations come as a result of the development and implementation of two innovative applications: one focused on water conservation and the other on enhancing public safety at large-scale events.
Residents have the opportunity to support Scottsdale's bid for these awards by voting for the projects until 5 p.m. (ET) on Friday, March 31.
These awards are designed to honor municipalities that effectively utilize electronic methods to improve life for residents and attract visitors and new businesses. Referred to as Smart Cities, these municipalities are at the forefront of embracing new technologies, with IDC showcasing their efforts.
Scottsdale's two finalist projects include:
Smart Water Conservation Application
Developed by the Scottsdale Water Conservation Office, this automated program aims to enhance water conservation efforts by identifying landscaping needs. Previously, merging water and land use information was a manual, time-consuming process that lacked consistency. The application now automates this task by identifying landscaping and calculating ground cover footage, tree canopy, and water surface area. This enables the city to quickly generate water budgets for large landscapes and provide guidance over the phone, reducing onsite inspections. The system increases classification accuracy, shortens response times, reduces administrative tasks, and identifies opportunities for water use reduction.
Scottsdale GIS App for the World’s Premier Golf Event
Each February, hundreds of thousands visit TPC Scottsdale for the WM Phoenix Open golf tournament, temporarily transforming it into a small city. In collaboration with Scottsdale Police and Fire departments, the Scottsdale GIS team developed a digital map application that updates every 30 seconds. It displays real-time locations and statuses of onsite first responders. This allows efficient dispatching of crews nearest to incidents while providing advanced venue maps to first responders for quick navigation to those in need. Additionally, it helps Scottsdale’s Emergency Operations Center staff identify high-activity areas, allocate paramedic units effectively, and track emergencies in real-time.
