Scottsdale's Neighborhood Advisory Commission has announced the recipients of the 2022 Spirit of Scottsdale Awards. Mildred Heber and the Holland Center were honored for their contributions to the community.

The awards, established in 2019, recognize individuals and organizations that embody the "Spirit of Scottsdale" through neighborhood stewardship and positive contributions to the city's physical, aesthetic, or social landscape.

Mildred Heber received the Individual award for her extensive volunteer work with Scottsdale Human Services. Known for her dedication at the Vista del Camino food bank, where she has volunteered for 14 years, Mildred is quoted as telling those she mentors that she “won’t stand for any sloppiness or not following guidelines.” Her commitment exemplifies the Spirit of Scottsdale through excellent service to those in need.

The Holland Center was awarded in the Organization category. Founded as The Foothills Community Foundation in 1986, this nonprofit serves as a hub for cultural programming, education, and community gatherings. It has supported various community initiatives like the Foothills Food Bank and Desert Foothills Land Trust. The Holland Center continues to offer resources and activities by collaborating with local and national speakers, artists, clinicians, and organizations.

This year’s awards saw 36 nominations highlighting nine individuals or organizations. Other nominees included McDowell Sonoran Conservancy volunteer Magdiel Galan-Oliveras; multi-committee member Patricia “Patty” Jager; residents Steve & Jane Stevens; resident Carter Unger; Joyrides AZ; Pearl White Signature; and Southwest Foodservice Excellence.

The winners were acknowledged on March 21 during a presentation at a regular meeting of Scottsdale City Council. Nominations for next year's awards will open in May.
