Arizona Forward has recognized the McDowell Sonoran Preserve's Fraesfield and Granite Mountain trailheads with Crescordia awards in two categories: "Natural Environment Preservation" and "Civic Buildings, Structures, and Landscape Design." The Crescordia award, derived from a Greek term meaning "growing in harmony," represents the highest honor in each category of the Environmental Excellence Awards program.
The Fraesfield and Granite Mountain trailheads were initially disturbed sites requiring restoration. A preservation project was undertaken to restore the natural habitat while expanding access to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. This project allowed for sustainable amenities that provide refuge, shade, and shelter to be designed with guidance from the natural environment. The eco-friendly trailheads utilize desert-appropriate materials to minimize environmental impact while integrating into the surrounding landscape. Each site aims to positively impact the environment while educating visitors about sustainability and preservation through interpretive signage.
Dedicated in October 2019, both trailheads offer public access to hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and rock climbing activities in the northern region of the preserve.
The design of both trailheads was executed by SmithGroup Architect/Landscape Architect, with construction carried out by Valley Rain.
Arizona Forward is an organization focused on enhancing environmental sustainability and economic vitality within Arizona and its local regions.
