Scottsdale is set to introduce a digital element to its upcoming primary election in August with the implementation of E-Qual. This system, provided by the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office, allows candidates to collect signatures electronically.

E-Qual matches voter information against the statewide voter registration database and offers voters a list of nomination petitions they can sign.

The city will hold its primary election on August 2, aiming to elect three council members. To be placed on the ballot, City Council candidates must gather 1,000 signatures from registered Scottsdale voters. Previously, these signatures were collected using paper petition sheets.

“We are excited to announce that this will be first election where Scottsdale candidates can collect electronic signatures using the E-Qual system,” said Mayor David D. Ortega. “This is a great and secure way to ensure our residents’ voices are being heard. It doesn’t get any easier than having the option to support a candidate from the comfort of your own home.”

While traditional paper petitions remain an option, E-Qual offers a safe and efficient alternative for residents who wish to sign petitions at their convenience. Candidates can use their websites, newsletters, and social media platforms to inform supporters about signing their petitions.

“In 2020, the Clerk’s Office processed over 2,400 pages of petition signatures,” said Mayor Ortega. “We hope candidates and residents will take advantage of E-Qual, our environment-friendly alternative.”

Candidates may begin submitting their petitions for the August 2 Primary Election starting March 7. Both online and paper petitions must be submitted along with other required documentation by April 4 at 5 p.m., according to City Clerk Ben Lane.

“When candidates are ready to submit their E-Qual petition signatures, along with any paper petitions and other required documentation, they should contact the Clerk’s Office to schedule an appointment,” Lane stated.

A general election is scheduled for November 8 if any positions remain unfilled after the primary election. A candidate must receive a majority of votes in their race during the primary election to be elected outright.

Scottsdale residents interested in running for City Council should reach out to Ben Lane at 480-312-2411 or [email protected].
