Scottsdale amends Prop. 490 ballot language following court ruling

The Scottsdale City Council amended the official ballot language for Proposition 490, a 0.15% city sales tax rate measure, during a special open public meeting on August 20 at Scottsdale City Hall. This action followed a Court of Appeals ruling that the original ballot measure could not proceed as written.

The City Council revised the ballot question language pursuant to the court’s order. The updated ballot language will be sent to Maricopa County so that Proposition 490 remains on the November 5 General Election ballot for Scottsdale voters.

Most city offices and facilities will be closed Monday, September 2, for Labor Day. Trash and recycling collection will not be affected. Residents are advised to place their containers in their typical spot by 5 a.m. on the day of collection or the night before.

Scottsdale has launched a new scholarship program called Scottsdale College Promise, aimed at supporting residents in achieving higher education goals. The initiative is a collaborative effort among the city of Scottsdale, Scottsdale Community College, Scottsdale Unified School District, and the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation. It provides financial assistance to eligible residents and graduates of Scottsdale high schools attending community colleges within Maricopa Community Colleges.

Former Councilman Robert Pettycrew passed away unexpectedly. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, September 8, at Eldorado Bar and Grill. Pettycrew was elected to his first term on the Scottsdale City Council in February 1994 and reelected in March 1998.

Public meetings scheduled for the week of August 26 include sessions by various commissions such as Tourism Development Commission and Planning Commission. No meetings are scheduled for the week of September 2.

WestWorld of Scottsdale will host events blending crafting and cowboys from August 29-31 with Quilt, Craft and Sewing Festival and Arizona Black Rodeo taking place.

Residents can also celebrate Chaparral Pool's anniversary with “Chap from the Past,” a free family event featuring swimming, live entertainment, food trucks, and more on August 31.

Scottsdale offers ongoing activities such as ArtWalks every Thursday evening and diverse events at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts throughout the year.

The fall Neighborhood College classes provide an opportunity for residents to get engaged with various aspects of community life through tracks like HOA/Condo management and local history lessons.

Scottsdale has been named the top pet-friendly city twice this month by WalletHub and LawnStarter. The Jane Rau Trail and equestrian parking lot at Brown’s Ranch will be closed through August 30 for trail repairs while other trailheads remain open.

Multiple Loop 101 overnight bridge closures are scheduled from August 22-23 as part of an Arizona Department of Transportation project to add lanes between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive/Pima Road.

The job opening for Water Safety Program Coordinator includes developing safety programs specific to water facility requirements within Scottsdale Water Resources Division.
