The Scottsdale Police Department announced the appointment of Karen Sutherland as the new Police Operations Support Director on February 14, 2024.
Karen Sutherland brings a wealth of experience and education to her new role, holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration and a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership and Administration from Concordia University in Michigan.
Having joined the department in 2007, Sutherland has held various positions within the department, including Records Supervisor and Records Manager. She was also recognized for her contributions as the founder of the AZ Law Enforcement Records Managers Association.
Sutherland's expertise in 911 Communications has earned her national, state, and local recognition, culminating in her recent accolade as the Communications Manager of the Year for the State of Arizona.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Sutherland is actively involved in the public safety community, serving on the Executive Board for the Arizona Chapter of the Association of Public Safety Officials and the State 911 Advisory Board. She was also instrumental in establishing the Maricopa Regional Dispatcher Academy through Glendale Community College.
As the newly appointed Police Operations Support Director, Sutherland will have oversight of Communications & Dispatch, the Real Time Crime Center, and equipment acquisitions within those areas.
