Fountain Hills Town Councilman Allen Skillicorn called on the town council to eliminate the town’s tax on housing rentals before the state’s ban takes effect to “attract more people to our community.”
“If we remove the tax early, we can attract more people to our community looking to save money on their rentals,” said Skillicorn. “The tax will be banned anyway in 2025; why not get a head start and ban the tax early and aggressively work to attract more people to our community?”
“The truth is increasing our population will have a far greater impact on our economy and our community’s tax revenue than the funds we receive from the tax on long-term rentals,” said Skillicorn. “Eliminating this tax early will give our community an edge in competing with other communities for new residents, new businesses, and new opportunities.”
Earlier this summer, Hobbs signed into law a bill “prohibiting municipalities from imposing rental taxes,” reported AZ Family. She had previous vetoed a bill, passed by the legislature, to prohibit the taxes, but agreed to sign the bill as part of a deal to put a half-cent transportation tax on the ballot this November.
The prohibition on rental taxes goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2025.
Skillicorn was elected to the Fountain Hills Town Council in the August 2022 election, receiving 4,824 votes to gain one of three available seats on the council. He formerly served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives and serves as a precinct committeeman for the Arizona Republican Party Legislative District 3.
