Maricopa County has rolled out its new COVID-19 assistance program and it’s already provided almost $1 million in rental assistance for the first month, according to Maricopa County's website.
The County COVID Rental Assistance (CCRA) initiative started on July 15 and since then has helped more than 300 households pay rent. The program has handed out 662 months of combined rent, totaling $993,000.
“There is an incredible need for rent assistance because of the economic downturn due to COVID-19. That’s why the board unanimously approved $30 million to fund this program using money from the CARES Act. We don’t want one crisis to lead to another,” Board of Supervisors Chairman Clint Hickman (District 4) said, according to the county's website.
The board initially green-lighted funding on June 8, roughly a month before CCRA was developed.
Bruce Liggett, director of Maricopa County Human Services Department, said detailed progress of the program will be posted every two weeks.
